Treasury Chief Rachel Reeves Intends Specific Action on Household Expenses in Forthcoming Budget

Treasury head Rachel Reeves has revealed she is preparing "targeted measures to tackle cost of living pressures" in next month's financial statement.

During an interview with media outlets, she emphasized that lowering inflation is a joint duty of both the administration and the Bank of England.

The UK's price growth is expected to be the most elevated among the Group of Seven industrialized countries this calendar year and next.

Possible Energy Cost Measures

Reports indicate the administration could take action to bring down utility costs, for instance by cutting the current 5% rate of value-added tax applied on energy supplies.

A further approach is to lower some of the regulatory levies presently included in bills.

Budgetary Limitations and Analyst Predictions

The government will obtain the next draft from the independent fiscal watchdog, the OBR, on Monday, which will reveal how much scope there is for these measures.

The consensus from most analysts is that the Chancellor will have to announce higher taxes or budget cuts in order to fulfill her self-imposed debt limits.

Previously on Thursday, calculations indicated there was a £22bn shortfall for the Treasury chief to resolve, which is at the more modest range of projections.

"There's a collective job between the central bank and the government to continue tackling some of the sources of price increases," the Chancellor stated to the BBC in the US capital, at the conferences of the IMF and World Bank.

Tax Commitments and Global Issues

While a great deal of the focus has been on expected tax rises, the chancellor said the most recent figures from the fiscal watchdog had not altered her commitment to manifesto promises not to increase rates on earnings tax, sales tax or National Insurance.

She attributed an "unpredictable global environment" with growing geopolitical and commercial tensions for the fiscal tax moves, probably to be directed on those "most able to pay."

International Trade Tensions

Addressing apprehensions about the United Kingdom's commercial links with China she said: "The UK's national security always come first."

Last week's declaration by Chinese authorities to strengthen trade restrictions on rare earths and other resources that are key for advanced tech production led American leader the US President to propose an additional 100% import tax on imports from China, increasing the prospect of an all-out commercial conflict between the two economic giants.

The US Treasury Secretary called the Chinese move "economic coercion" and "a international production control attempt."

Inquired about considering the American proposal to join its dispute with China, Reeves said she was "very concerned" by Chinese actions and called on the Beijing authorities "to avoid restrictions and restrict access."

She said the move was "harmful for the global economy and generates further headwinds."

"I believe there are sectors where we should challenge Chinese policies, but there are also significant opportunities to export to Chinese markets, including financial services and other sectors of the economy. We've got to achieve that balance appropriate."

The Treasury chief also affirmed she was collaborating with international partners "on our own essential resources approach, so that we are less reliant."

Health Service Drug Pricing and Investment

Reeves also admitted that the cost the National Health Service spends on drugs could increase as a consequence of ongoing discussions with the US government and its drugs companies, in exchange for lower tariffs and funding.

A number of the biggest global drug companies have said lately that they are either pausing or abandoning operations in the UK, with some attributing the low prices they are obtaining.

Last month, the Science Minister said the cost the health service spends on medicines would have to increase to prevent businesses and drug research funding departing from the United Kingdom.

The Chancellor told the BBC: "We have seen as a result of the payment system, that medical research, innovative medicines have not been offered in the United Kingdom in the extent that they are in other EU nations."

"The objective is to ensure that individuals receiving care from the NHS are can obtain the top critical treatments in the world. And so we are looking at all of that, and... seeking to attract increased funding into the UK."
