The Red Devils Poised to Secure German Striker Lea Schüller from Bayern Munich
The Women's Super League club are on the verge of completing the signing for prolific German forward Lea Schüller in a permanent move from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.
A Marquee Signing for the WSL Side
The forward, with six months left on her contract, is known as a prolific goalscorer for both club and country. Having scored more than 100 goals for Bayern and scored 54 times in 82 caps for her country. This signing will be seen as a major signing for the WSL team.
Departure from Bayern has been anticipated since she appeared to be fighting back tears while applauding the German club’s fans after a victory over Bayer Leverkusen this month.
It was reported in late December that the German women's top flight was losing one of its leading strikers. Per reports, all the paperwork for the transfer have now been completed.
Consistent Goalscoring to Boost the Attack
The 28-year-old’s signing is expected to provide a significant uplift to the team's attacking options. Schüller has been highly reliable in front of goal in the Bundesliga.
- Over seven straight seasons, up to and including the last term, she achieved at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
- She won the Golden Boot in 2021-22 season with a haul of 16 goals.
Building Steam at Carrington
Securing the German international coincides with a period when United seem to be gathering positive momentum.
Recent on-pitch successes include qualifying for the Champions League knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a win in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.
Off the pitch, the winter break has seen additional activity:
- The acquisition of Swedish right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
- The new deal for Japan midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, a popular figure since joining in 2023.
Regarding the midfielder's new deal, a senior figure stated: “Miyazawa is now a vital component to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and skill allows her and the team to control and dictate play from the middle of the park.”
Lundkvist, who has arrived from a club in the NWSL, added: “You can sense how much they [United] have grown in the last few years, competing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and performing in the top European competition.”
