The network's Top Fresh Series of This Year Earns a Substantial Renewal for an Additional Two Seasons.

Last October, the late-night programming block saw the return of its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. But, shortly thereafter, the channel launched a brand-new animated series with a markedly softer vibe. Haha, You Clowns emerged as sweet and soothing, evoking a animated take of a serene talk show. During a period often characterized by cynicism, this show's earnestness struck a chord and helped it become a breakout hit.

A Significant Investment

In mid-December, Adult Swim revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for two more seasons. This gives creator Joe Cappa ample opportunity to develop the world of the Campbell family. The series focuses on three well-mannered teenage brothers whose central trait is their profound affection for their widowed father, with Cappa portraying for all four main characters.

"My deepest thanks go to the viewers of the show who gave *Haha, You Clowns* a chance and helped it grow," remarked Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."

Network Praise

The official statement also included laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "profoundly sincere and oddly captivating." He shouted out the fans who found the show and championed its distinctly quirky appeal.

"All of you supported this new show, championed for it on social media, and grew it week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Wholesome Alternative

Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a gentle counterpart" to other adult animated fare. There’s something deeply soothing about observing this lovable family navigate their simple existence.

In earlier interviews, creator Joe Cappa expressed his goal to move the comedy genre beyond its prevailing layer of irony. He traced this trend to a broader media landscape.

“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” noted Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we need to laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”

What Comes Next

Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa has the opportunity to catalyze that very evolution. At a minimum, the renewal ensures audiences more opportunities to enjoy the warm glow of the beloved Campbell clan.

The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns is scheduled to air on December 21st. The complete first season is available for streaming on HBO Max.
