Shoaib Bashir Makes Surprise Selection in England's Test Series Squad
The English team has opted for a twelve-player squad just two days before the opening Test match, with Shoaib Bashir securing a unexpected spot.
The 22-year-old’s selection indicates that the visiting team will delay until the day of the initial match to decide whether Perth Stadium pitch favor four seamers or the inclusion of a spinner.
Jofra Archer and Mark Wood are part of the selected group, indicating there are no concerns about their fast bowler's fitness.
Gus Atkinson and Brydon Carse round out the bowling group, with the latter expected to miss out if the spinner makes the starting XI.
Pitch Factors Favor Seamers
The England coach had been anticipated to choose an all-seam attack on a venue that has staged several previous Tests.
During these games, the majority of dismissals have fallen to pace bowling, with only a small number to spin.
Of those 40 wickets, the veteran spinner has claimed 29, while all visiting spinners combined have just a handful.
At a venue known for its pace and bounce, and whose groundsman, the pitch preparer, pledged that these characteristics are “permanent and not going to change,” a side relying on fast bowlers is still the probable choice.
Alternative Choices Weighed
There had been rumors that Will Jacks could be brought into the team to offer some slow bowling while also strengthening the batting lineup.
But McCullum has chosen to keep faith with the young spinner, having said previously that he would be his preferred slow bowler for the Ashes.
Earlier, Lyon commented on Bashir as “OK,” saying that “in my eyes, the experienced spinner is still England’s top slow bowler.”
“This is a massive role, and it can be a massive challenge for people who lack experience in the past in Australian pitches,” he remarked of spin bowling in Australian Tests.
“I’m not going to reveal my strategies so they come out and perform well out here.”
