Senegal's Rising Talent Lamine Camara: Starting from Dreams to Tournament Favorites.

When I walk into the space, the young midfielder grabs a soccer ball he won’t let go of until after the conversation. It’s a powerful visual metaphor for a dream he has always held onto. “My sole focus was the beautiful game; I was focused solely on that,” remarks the AS Monaco and Senegal playmaker.

His resolve and raw talent convinced teams such as Metz, Monaco, and Génération Foot. Yet, the hardest person to convince was not a club executive or coach, it was from his dad. “He was against me to play football simply because he hadn’t seen me play,” says Camara.

Surmounting Early Hurdles

Eventually, on “a special day,” he received his father’s blessing to chase his career in the game. Another challenge was his modest frame, which discouraged local club Casa Sports from offering him a contract.

However, the famed academy – the institution that produced stars like Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – saw his potential instantly. After he earned the best player in a local competition, the scouts were “shocked” to learn he was without a contract. They moved fast. “They took me directly to the academy. They prevented me from returning to Casamance,” he recalled.

A Landmark Season and Continental Breakthrough

This move set him on a pathway to Europe. A defining period came in 2023, “a year to remember,” which began with him lifting the African Nations Championship. Just weeks later, though tired, he competed in the U-20 Africa Cup, guiding his nation to victory and being named player of the tournament.

A month later, he signed for Metz, following in the footsteps of Mané. “Adapting was never a challenge,” says the youngster. He resides alone in Europe, a situation his relatives support to keep him focused.

Inspiration and Playing Style

Distractions aren't a concern for Camara, who draws inspiration from the Belgian maestro's “humility” and exceptional playing qualities. Additionally, he's a huge fan of midfielders such as Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his international teammate Idrissa Gana Gueye.

His ball striking and accuracy from set pieces are key strengths. He admits he must to control his competitive fire, after being shown red at the start of his tenures at both Metz and Monaco. “It is a habit that is following me!” he jokes.

Life at Monaco, Teammates and Future Goals

With his current club, he cherishes the guidance of teammates like Denis Zakaria and especially Paul Pogba. “When I heard about the interest in Pogba, I thought we are fortunate,” Camara noted.

Right now, attention is squarely on the Africa Cup of Nations with Senegal. “We are the team to beat – there's no denying it. After defeating England on their soil…,” he says, pointing to a memorable 3-1 victory in Nottingham.

Regarding a future move to the English top flight, he remains committed to Monaco at present. “I feel really comfortable here,” he affirms. However, he's often ribbed by icon El-Hadji Diouf about his two Best Young Player awards. Camara jokes, yet remains determined about winning the senior Africa Player of the Year in the future.

“The pressure is on us – we can’t hide from that. Having beaten England at Wembley… it instills belief.”

Moving forward, Lamine Camara blends humble beginnings, unwavering focus, and big dreams targeting to guide Senegal to continental glory and build his own lasting legacy in the game.
