Pizza Market Saturation? Domino's Pizza Leader Exits After Move Into Fried Chicken.

A boss of Domino's Pizza Group who suggested the United Kingdom might have reached maximum pizza demand while expanding the franchise into poultry items has been ousted after conflicts with its directors.

Executive Change

Andrew Rennie is exiting after a brief tenure in the top role, and will be succeeded on an temporary basis by the company's operations head, Frampton, while Domino's seeks a long-term chief.

The outgoing executive, who served at Domino's for more than two decades, had attempted to pivot Britain's leading pizza delivery company towards poultry-based products, remarking recently there was not “massive growth” left in the British pizza industry. He said poultry was the fastest-growing menu item in the world.

Governance Tensions

Reports indicate that there was disagreement between Rennie and the governance team over his approach and business vision, although the company's release said he was stepping down “by mutual agreement”.

New Brand Introduction

In the autumn, Domino's introduced its chicken-focused offering – which the former chief described as a “significant new phase” for the organization – and is piloting it in 210 outlets in the North West region and the province.

While the firm is still intending to launch it across its nearly 1,400 branches in 2026 as intended, it considers chicken products as an addition to its primary pizza operations.

Leadership Comment

The Domino's chair, the Domino's chairman, commented: “Directors think that there are a range of possibilities to boost expansion and value creation in Domino's core business. We are focused on finding the right chief executive to lead the disciplined execution of that growth strategy.”

Market Difficulties

In the latest update, Domino's, which has millions of users in the British Isles, said orders declined by 1.5 percent in the Q3. In August, it alerted that the quick-service industry had “grown more challenging” as it blamed weaker consumer confidence in the period before the budget and rising wage costs for disappointing revenue and a 15 percent decline in half-year profits.

Competitors are also facing challenges. Pizza Hut disclosed the closure of multiple locations a recently, after the business behind its British operations fell into administration.

Wellness Efforts

Trying to keep up with customer preferences towards better nutrition, the company has introduced light items, such as its light base range of pizzas below 400 calories as well as meat-free and allergy-friendly options. A large pepperoni pizza has 2,311 calories. A large cheese and tomato pizza has over 2,100, while a personal has under 1,000 calories.

Interim Management

Frampton has been with the company since 2021, and previously worked for the betting firm William Hill. It is believed that she does not want to occupy the chief executive role on a full-time basis.

She commented: “The company has a number of active growth and performance initiatives that we will be dedicated to executing at pace.”

She said these involved further work on the company's logistics network and product development, and its rewards program.

Domino's is also lacking a permanent finance director until the spring, when Andy Andrea comes aboard from the beverage producer C&C Group. For now, Richard Snow acts as temporary CFO.
