The acclaimed crime series Line of Duty is officially returning for its 7th installment, confirmed by the broadcaster.

A brand new six-episode season written by the show's creator will begin filming in Belfast in the coming months, as confirmed by the network.

The actress expressed excitement about the comeback, saying she was "so excited" about the show's renewal. Her co-star remarked, "What a joy it is to know that the main trio will be reuniting together soon."

The previous season wrapped up in recent years with a finale that attracted more than 17 million viewers. Rumors about a new season have been circulating ever since, but confirmation only arrived this week.

Fresh Obstacles for AC-12

Series seven will open with AC-12 no longer existing and renamed as the Inspectorate of Police Standards, as revealed by the announcement.

Steve Arnott, Vicky McClure's role, and Adrian Dunbar's part continue tasked to tackle corruption within the police force.

Their work "faces unprecedented challenges", and under these circumstances, the trio will take on their "most sensitive case to date."

Fresh Face and Complex Case

An additional officer, Det Insp Dominic Gough, described as a charming officer celebrated for takedowns of organized crime, is accused of abusing his position to act as a offender.

However, this investigation could be a deliberate distraction from a bigger threat still operating in the background, the teaser hinted.

Speaking about the renewal, Jed Mercurio said: "Everyone involved feels enormous gratitude to the dedicated viewers."

"We're privileged to have had so many fans track the developments of the unit over six previous seasons and we are thrilled to be returning for a seventh season."

He added: "Corruption in this country was thought to be over while the series was off air, so I've been compelled to use my imagination."

Cast Reactions

Martin Compston called being part of the series as "the role of a career".

"Beyond the show's success but the people I've collaborated with I now call some of my closest friends."

"I'm excited to pull the waistcoat on again and get the team back together," he added.

Vicky McClure stated: "It goes without saying I'm very happy the show is returning! Can't wait to work with the creator, Compston and Adrian again. Belfast, we'll be there shortly!"

Adrian Dunbar commented: "As we count down the AC-12 days of Christmas, how exciting it is to know that the central trio will be back filming next year."

"Delighted with the news and looking forward to those unexpected twists and turns."

Series Legacy

Line of Duty premiered in the early 2010s and evolved into a highly successful television series of the last decade, attracting notable actors such as Kelly Macdonald.

Broadcasters haven't revealed exactly the upcoming series will hit screens.

The conclusion of series six brought the long-running storyline about the hunt for criminal mastermind known as "H" to a close, and the creative team indicated at the time there were no intentions for further series.

Nevertheless, the corporation announced on this week that a seventh series is now being produced.
