Eric Adams Plans to Back Former Governor Andrew Cuomo in New York City Mayoral Race

New York City Mayor Mayor Adams declared his plan to support former Governor Cuomo in the upcoming election for mayor, even after months of public tension between the two Democratic figures.

A Surprising Reversal After Recent Criticism

Only weeks ago, Adams had lashed out at the former governor, labeling him a “snake and a untruthful person” and alleging of having “a career of pushing Black candidates out of races.” Yet, in a recent statement, Mayor Adams reversed course, stating he now plans to appear with Cuomo in areas where he holds strong support.

“I think that it is imperative to really wake up the communities of color that have suffered from urban displacement on how critical this race is,” the mayor commented.

The mayor further explained, “Residents have seen their housing costs rise due to neighborhood changes and they have been ignored in those areas, and I’m going to go to those neighborhoods and talk directly with community leaders and organizations and I will appear with the governor in those neighborhoods and get them engaged.”

Race Dynamics and Recent Events

The election battle has so far been shaped by the competition between Cuomo and progressive candidate Zohran Mamdani, whose growing support has made headlines internationally and represented hopes for a rejuvenated leftwing of the Democrats.

In a recent mayoral debate, both the democratic socialist and GOP candidate his conservative opponent announced they would reject the mayor's support if offered.

Earlier this year, Adams had begun his bid for another term as an unaffiliated candidate after facing federal corruption charges which were later dropped in return for Adams’s cooperation with government enforcement actions across the city.

During a separate media briefing on Thursday, Adams answered reporters asking about the support announcement by stating, “Andrew and I will appear together this evening.”

This development came a day after Adams and Cuomo were seen sitting courtside together at the New York Knicks’ season opener at the famous arena, which occurred right after a heated candidate debate.
