Australia's captain Expected to Feature a Major Role in the Ashes

Australian cricket captain

The pace bowler has secured 309 wickets in 71 appearances with an average of 22.10.

The Australian chief selector Bailey has stated that skipper Cummins will have a crucial role in this winter's historic rivalry.

Speculation had been growing that the veteran bowler might miss the series due to a stress fracture in his back that had not yet healed.

Initial reports from the squad suggested no final decision had been made regarding his involvement, with the Test matches scheduled to begin on the 21st of November in the WACA.

Bailey expressed that the captain is progressing and felt positive about his chances of being involved.

"It's clear that the clock is ticking and multiple considerations at play, not only the back issue, but other factors as well," he commented.

"It's positive. There's strong faith that he'll participate in a major part. With luck starting in Perth. If not, we'll adjust."

Past Concerns

The captain missed the white-ball matches against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals last month after scans revealed a lower back issue.

There is a track record of back injuries, with recurrences in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 causing him to miss three Australian summers in four years.

He emphasized he would be proactive in his approach in his rehabilitation process to make the squad for the Ashes.

Bailey noted that he did not know if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his rehabilitation but admitted it was "becoming urgent" for him to regain fitness for the opener.

Alternative Arrangements

If he's unavailable, veteran batsman Smith will assume leadership.

The talented all-rounder was withdrawn recently from the national team for their one-day international series against India as a safety move because of discomfort in his torso.

The selector characterized it as a "small issue and mentioned that Green will play in the state-level matches, so will be "well-prepared to resume bowling."

"Extensive planning has gone into building out the plan for him to take part for the initial game as an batting and bowling option," the selector detailed.

"His involvement was limited to the starting games in any case. How he handles the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, if it causes any delay for another day, we opted to take a cautious route."
