Aaron Rai Secures Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship in Thrilling Play-Off Showdown Versus Tommy Fleetwood

The 30-year-old golfer displayed remarkable nerve to secure the prestigious Abu Dhabi title on Sunday, defeating Tommy Fleetwood in a tense play-off following a rollercoaster final round of competition.

The Englishman nailed a decisive birdie putt from just over eight feet to clinch the win, repeating his sole prior Rolex Series triumph at the Scottish Open in 2020, which was also a play-off win against Fleetwood.

Sunday's Play Drama

The champion started the final round with a one-shot advantage over countryman Fleetwood and Danish golfer Nicolai Højgaard. He ended up with a total score of twenty-under after a up-and-down, five-under final round that included seven birdies and two bogeys.

Fleetwood edged one shot clear with two holes remaining after a birdie putt on the 16th, but his rival tied it up again on the seventeenth and then missed a ten-foot birdie putt to win outright on the final hole.

Playoff Climax

That set up a play-off at the Yas Links course where Rai prevailed to take the championship and $1.5m (£1.13 million) in winnings.

Other Contenders

Rory McIlroy left himself just too much to make up, finishing a stroke short in a tie for third with Højgaard, after a spectacular 10-under closing round of 62. It was his lowest-ever score on the European Tour, including eight birdie putts and one eagle.

The Danish golfer carded six birdies of his as well, but his chances of leading the leaderboard were hit by a dropped shot on the twelfth. England’s Mansell produced an superb last round seven-under to end up tied for fifth with Australian Daniel Hillier.
